Cesar Azpilicueta is keeping his fingers crossed that he will be named Chelsea captain, according to the Telegraph.
When John Terry walked out the door, having worn the armband since 2004, he passed his responsibilities onto Gary Cahill. With Cahill not getting a run-out on the pitch for love nor money under Maurizio Sarri, another change of captain has seemed inevitable.
Azpilicueta, who was promoted to vice-captain after Terry’s departure, has captained Chelsea in all seven of our Premier League fixtures so far. Though his performance level has been below his usual standards, Chelsea sit third in the table and undefeated.
‘Dave’ may feel as though his audition to be Chelsea captain has been a successful one. The Telegraph report that Azpilicueta is hoping that Sarri will choose him to be the Blues’ new full-time captain, with Cahill being left out in the cold.

The Telegraph note that Premier League top goal-scorer Eden Hazard is also in the running. Hazard captained Belgium to a third-place finish at the World Cup this summer, but the report claims that he is not really fussed whether Sarri picks him.
Azpilicueta has been an exemplary servant to this football club and there’s no more worthy candidate in the squad to be our new captain. Sarri ought to make the right decision and give him the armband on a permanent basis.
