Chelsea are set to enter contract talks with centre-back David Luiz, according to the Mirror.
Luiz will be remembered fondly by the Chelsea faithful long after his departure from the club. He has been a superb servant over two stints as a Blue.
In his first, he paved the way for untraditional, ball-playing defenders to establish themselves as the norm in top teams. Though sometimes unreliable, he never failed to entertain. He also scored an emphatic penalty in the Champions League final shootout back in 2012.
After spending two years with PSG, Luiz returned a more mature and accomplished defender, though still rough around the edges. Being fielded in the middle of Antonio Conte’s back three provided him with a new lease of life. He was influential once again as we won the Premier League title.
David Luiz played a starring role in Chelsea’s Premier League title triumph in 2016/17.
Having fallen down the pecking order last term, Luiz has won back his spot in the starting lineup under Maurizio Sarri. It looks as though he will be rewarded for his reemergence with a new contract.
The Mirror report that Chelsea will soon open talks with Luiz over extending his deal. He has less than a year left to run on the contract he signed back in the summer of 2016.
Let’s hope that we can get this one tied up before the turn of the year. His precarious contract situation means he would be free to talk to clubs in January over a potential summer move.
