Two Chelsea players have been ruled out of Chelsea’s clash with Cardiff City tomorrow afternoon through illness.
They are Emerson Palmieri and Davide Zappcosta. Maurizio Sarri revealed that the pair have been struck down by illness and will subsequently miss tomorrow’s game.
Both players were called up by Roberto Mancini to represent Italy over the international break. It seems likely that there was something going round in the Italian camp.
Sarri’s options at full-back have subsequently been narrowed to two. Though, it seems likely that Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso will have been given the nod anyway. Both have been superb so far this term.
Emerson and Zappacosta’s route into the starting eleven is obscured, as it was last season, but there’s better days on the horizon for the pair.
With Chelsea competing in the Europa League, and being drawn in an incredibly weak group, our fringe players will all be given opportunities to impress in the coming weeks and months.
The two full-backs will benefit from Sarri’s likely rotation. Whether they will be hoping to play their way into the team, or the January shop window, is another matter.
Sarri also added during his pre-match presser that Ruben Loftus-Cheek picked up an injury while away with England. He is, at this point, unsure whether he’ll be fit to feature.
