Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has delivered some worrying news for Blues fans, admitting that Alvaro Morata may not feature in Saturday’s Premier League key clash against Liverpool.
Having already netted nine times and provided four assists in all competitions, Morata is the club’s top goalscorer so far. The Spaniard has proved Blues to be worth the staggering £58m that allowed him to join the London club from Real Madrid this summer.
Conte left him on the bench for the first part of Chelsea’s 4-0 Champions League match against Qarabag with a view, it was thought, to make him rest ahead of Liverpool.
However, speaking to the press at the pre-match press conference, the Italian boss has left everyone speechless since admitting that he wasn’t sure about lining him up against Jurgen Klopp’s men.
He said: “I think that we have to make the best decision game by game, to try to find the best solution for the team, also to give the right rest to my players.
“Last time, Morata played three games in a row, the third game against Manchester City he was injured. I have to pay great attention in all situations to try to take sometimes the risk. This is my job. I like to do this.”
Conte hailed the young Spaniard’s positive performances: “He is an important player for us. For me the striker is very important to have a point of reference to do what I want is very important.
“In our system, the striker is a figure very important for us and for this reason he is always involved in our chances. Sometimes he scores, sometimes he makes an assist for his teammate.”
He concluded: “To play this league for a striker is not simple because this league is very tough and also it is very different compared with the previous league that he played in Italy and Spain but he showed great commitment and to be a clever person to adapt himself to this league.”
