Antonio Conte has backed Danny Drinkwater after the midfielder turned down to opportunity to play for England, the Daily Star reports.
England manager Gareth Southgate wanted to call up the 27-year-old. However, the player was concerned with the level he was at to play for his national team.
When speaking in a press conference on Friday, Conte believes Drinkwater didn’t deserve the public criticism he recieved during the international break, as the Daily Star reports.
Conte is quoted by the Daily Star saying:
“Drinkwater was very honest and he doesn’t deserve to be attacked from the press or from the people because he was very honest.”
Will this decision affect Drinkwater’s performances this season?
Drinkwater’s experience and the attitude he has shown since joining Chelsea has been first class.
Despite being injured, the £30m signing’s performances haven’t taken a hit.
It’s uncertain if the player will be part of the England squad for the World Cup. Chances at Chelsea are also likely to be limited.
However, Drinkwater has given us a useful midfield option that will be beneficial later on in the season.
