Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is Italy’s number one choice to replace Gian Piero Ventura as national team manager.

The Azzurri shocked the footballing world when they failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after losing to Sweden in the play-off tie.

It will be the first time Italy has not appeared at the tournament since 1958.

Conte, who coached Italy for two years before joining Chelsea, has made no secret of his desire to return to his homeland.

Other candidates include unemployed ex-Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Mancini.
