With the first international break out of the way and the return of the Champions League this week the football season is well underway, though there is just one thing missing.

Each new season brings with it a wave of updated football games and, while FIFA may take the lion’s share of the market, Pro Evolution Soccer has spent the last few seasons creeping up behind them.

PES 2018 is expected to follow in the footsteps of its predecessors, with a superior match engine and gameplay. There is still the one, rather significant, sticking point however. While the experience may be better in terms of the gameplay, the lack of licensing remains a big issue for many players.

With that in mind, Standard Sport runs you through exactly what you can find in the game, and what you can do to fill the gaps…

Just the two Premier League sides, Arsenal and Liverpool, will appear in the game under their real names – whilst the only other licensed English team are Fulham.

Elsewhere in Europe the 2018 edition has every Ligue 1 and Eredivisie team and, excluding Juventus, Serie A sides. Furthermore, from La Liga, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia are licensed.

The only Premier League stadium licensed in PES 2018 is Liverpool’s Anfield, however, there are some big ones on the continent.

Given their exclusive deal with Barcelona, the Camp Nou will be in the game (and not FIFA 18) while Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, the San Siro and Stadio Olimpico will all feature.

As with the teams, in the Premier League it will just be Arsenal and Liverpool who will walk out in their real kits, while some other big names available include Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Schalke.

Option File

If you’re not so keen on playing as Man Red, London FC or South Norwood then there is good news.

For £5 you can get this season’s option file from PES Universe which will get you all the licensing you could ever want, from kits to names and crests.

If you’re in the mood for some big spending, though, you can opt for the £10 version which will give you all the licensing and will provide updates throughout the season.
