Steven Gerrard says that Jose Mourinho attempted to sign him “five or six times” throughout his playing career.
Gerrard spent all but one of his 18 years as a player at Liverpool, winning nine trophies overall.
The midfielder retired after one year in Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy, and has since returned to Anfield in a coaching capacity.
But the 39-year-old had the option of leaving the Reds on a number of occasions, most notably to join Chelsea after the club’s Champions League win in 2005.
He eventually decided to stay however, and says that was only one of a number of times that he turned down the chance to link up with Mourinho.
When asked how close he was to working under the Portuguese, Gerrard told fans at an event called ‘Steven Gerrard Live’ in Belfast: “It depends how close, close is.
“Of course there was a lot of speculation around 2004/2005.
“He tried to sign me probably about five or six times during my career.
“Twice at Chelsea, he tried to sign me at Inter Milan and for Real Madrid as well.
“I could have gone and played for him at different teams but I never did.”
