I do not doubt that Arsenal want to sign Kylian Mbappe. I do not doubt that the British media want Arsenal to sign – or not to sign, as it were – Kylian Mbappe even more so.

Most clubs would want to sign Mbappe, and most outlets that like the clicks will happily publish stories about how ‘speculation is mounting that Arsenal could be poised to make a move for Monaco star’. If Arsenal sign him, great. If Arsenal do not sign him, they have ‘missed out’ or have been ‘snubbed’.

Which brings us to the Daily Mirror, who are one of many, many outlets to take a picture of Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis together in Nice, and deduce that they must be there to negotiate a deal for Mbappe.

‘The Arsenal boss has been pictured in the south of France along the French Riviera and looked deep in conversation with Gazidis as they plan a busy summer of transfer acitivity.’

Yes. Acitivity.

‘Cote d’Azur Airport in Nice is the nearest location to Monaco and the presence of both Wenger and Gazidis has only heightened speculation that a deal for Mbappe could be moving a step closer to being completed.’

The only people ‘heightening the speculation’ are Arsenal fans on Twitter and you, Mr. Mirror.

Considering the headline – ‘Arsene Wenger spotted in Nice with Ivan Gazidis as move to sign Kylian Mbappe intensifies’ – we rather hoped that we would be treated to some inside information. How has the move ‘intensified’, exactly? But alas.

Of course, there could be no other reason why Wenger and Gazidis were pictured together in Nice last weekend…

A little more Mbappe now, because you’ve been good so far today.

Back on May 19, it was reported that the Monaco striker was the subject of a £64.3m bid from Liverpool.

Back on May 21, it was reported that the Monaco striker was the subject of a £103m bid from Real Madrid.

Back on June 2, it was reported that the Monaco striker was the subject of an £87m bid from Arsenal.

On June 6, The Sun rehash stories from across Europe claiming that the Monaco striker will be the subject of a £118m bid from Real Madrid.

On June 6, we have already seen numerous reports, all attributed to L’Equipe, claiming that the Monaco striker will be the subject of a bid of either £121.9m, £118m or £95m.

Point one: Nobody has a clue. Point two: Mbappe is breaking the £100m barrier, isn’t he?

Moving away from Monaco for just a second, we head to the Manchester Evening News for the latest on Romelu Lukaku.

They have an exclusive on the Belgian striker, with the claim that Bayern Munich have joined the race to sign him. It’s between the German giants, Chelsea and Manchester United now.

Couple that with an update from the Daily Telegraph – that striker Alvaro Morata is now United’s ‘number one summer target’, and the puzzle is coming together.

Another transfer exclusive now, and this time it’s the Daily Star with the scoop. And you might not attribute that newspaper with Manchester United or Cristiano Ronaldo exclusives, but they’re full of surprises.

‘EXCLUSIVE: Cristiano Ronaldo will never come back to Manchester United’ is the headline in news that will surely leave the football world stunned. Here we all were thinking he’d leave the reigning European and Spanish champions to join a club in sixth elsewhere.
