It might be a little difficult to remember, but Ashley Cole was once one of the world’s best left-backs, if not defenders, in football.
The now 35-year-old has courted controversy throughout his career, including a move from Arsenal to staunch London rivals Chelsea in July 2006 – a transfer that saw him vilified by Gunners fans across the world.
The ex-England international also saw his reputation on the world stage come in for scrutiny and, in the seasons that have followed, he has almost been forgotten about.
The LA Galaxy star, however, still has some fans out there and, taking to his official twitter account on Friday, attempted to provoke a reaction from football supporters with a tweet that contained a quote from Ronaldinho, who stated that Cole was one of the world’s best defenders at one point:
Even Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo said he was once one of the best in the world:
@Cristiano thanks for the appreciation my friend I enjoyed our battles, we will call it a draw 😂⚽️

Instead of receiving a torrent of abuse, however, the full back was surprisingly backed by a host of fans over the claims made by Ronaldinho:
At the top of his career @TheRealAC3 Ashley Cole was probably the best left sided defenders in the Europe if not the world. Class player.

Even more surprisingly, some Arsenal fans agreed with the sentiments expressed by others:
@TheRealAC3 as a gooner it was tragic to see you leave, no doubt in my opinion, you were the best left back of your generation!!

@TheRealAC3 hate how you left Arsenal but can’t deny you’re the best left back I’ve ever seen.

It would be remiss to say that every reaction was universally positive, mind you:
@TheRealAC3 Don’t think many people have said you were rubbish. Just that you are a bit of an arse.

Still, despite football fans often being accused as fickle, it’s good to see a player remembered for the quality he possessed.
