Mikel, 29, missed the start of the season to represent Nigeria at the Olympic Games and has not featured since returning from Rio De Janeiro.
According to Own Goal Nigeria, Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr was told by Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo that the midfielder has no future at the club.
“Talks were held between Mikel and the manager,” Own Goal Nigeria quote a source as saying.
“As for now he has been told he can leave in January, mind you his contract is set to expire in the summer.
“There’s every possibility for him to leave Chelsea either on loan or permanently in January but the summer looks more likely.
“Every story must have an end.
“After 11 seasons, Mikel wants to move on and so too Chelsea.”

“He has been open and honest with me,” he said. “I respect him for that.
“He has explained the situation and I totally understand.”
Mikel has won 10 major honours in 10 and a half seasons at Stamford Bridge.
