The last three matches of the EFL Cup’s round of 16 played out on Wednesday night, bringing fans some nice midweek action ahead of the weekend’s Premier League fixtures.
Here’s a quick roundup of those matches.
Southampton 1-0 Sunderland: Sofiane Boufal scored the only goal of the game, striking in the 66th minute and helping the Saints to a narrow win against David Moyes’ Sunderland.
The Saints’ record signing showed just what the South Coast side paid for when he fired a phenomenal curling shot into the top corner from the edge of the box, marking his first start for the club in memorable fashion.
West Ham United 2-1 Chelsea: Chelsea could not continue their run against their London rivals and failed to pick up a clean sheet for the first time in four games. Cheikhou Kouyate opened the scoring for the Hammers on 11 minutes, and Edimilson Fernandes doubled the lead just three minutes into the second half.
The Blues pulled one back through Gary Cahill very deep in stoppage time, but were forced to bow out of the competition, as it was essentially the last kick of the game. They will be hoping that form returns against Southampton on the weekend.
The end of the game was marred by senseless violence between sections of the two sides’ supporters, clashing and throwing objects which appeared to include chairs at the full time whistle in ugly scenes.
