Thierry Henry feels some Chelsea players were desperate to prove themselves to Jose Mourinho on Sunday.

There were some reports of disharmony when the West London club sacked Mourinho in December last year with players such as Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic in particular blamed for the team’s subpar title defence in 2015/16.

On Sunday, however, this pair in particular starred as the Blues hammered Mourinho’s Manchester United 4-0 which Henry suggests was a great chance for the players to prove, not only to their former boss, but to the football public that they are still quality performers.

“Those guys wanted to prove something to Mourinho, the guys that were maybe not in favour of him last year,” the Arsenal legend said on Sky Sports.

“Maybe he dropped some, maybe he wasn’t happy with some.

“I think today they wanted to prove a point to him, not only the whole league, and themselves and the fans, but also to him.

“The balance of the team is right and the desire is right. It does help scoring early in the game, but they managed the game.

Eden Hazard was amazing, Nemanja Matic had a very good game and they were all good, to be fair.”
