Chelsea and Everton will once more go head-to-head in a transfer battle for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, whilst both teams remain interested in bringing Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly to Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park respectively.
Reported in the Mirror, the pair will fight it out in order to secure the services of the £30m Portuguese man as both clubs look to further enhance their midfield.
Following Everton owner Farhad Moshiri’s decision to match any offer the west London side have made for the Napoli defender, it appears that the chase for Carvalho may also be a long one.
It is believed that the Toffees currently lead the race for the midfielder, however Antonio Conte remains keen to overhaul his playing squad at Stamford Bridge.
Whilst Chelsea have already added N’Golo Kante to their midfield options this summer, the Blues struggled to assert themselves in the middle of the park last term.
Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic were both criticised for their lethargic performances and the potential arrival of Carvalho, combined with Kante’s move to the club will certainly take Conte’s side back to the powerful engine room style they were once associated with.
Meanwhile, on Merseyside, Ronald Koeman will be keen to solidify his midfield ahead of his debut season at Goodison Park.
After back-to-back bottom half finishes, the club will be looking to kick on this season, building upon the firm foundations that a signing such as Carvalho can bring to a side. Impressive in Portugal’s Euro 2016 success, Carvalho went through the tournament relatively unnoticed.
However, his displays from deep in midfield allowed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and the emerging Renato Sanches to cause the opposition problems.
Previously the clubs have also been locked in a transfer battle when Chelsea attempted to lure Everton defender John Stones away from Goodison Park, seeing a number of bids rebuffed by their rivals.
