With the last game of the season signifying everything to play for, Chelsea knew that if Liverpool won then they would not have Champions League football next season. Before the game began it was almost certain Liverpool were going to win their game against Brighton, meaning Chelsea’s match vs Newcastle didn’t have any significance for either team as the whistle blew to kick the match off.
Whilst I want to say that Chelsea gave it all during that match, the first half display was one of the worst I’ve seen from Chelsea this season. They were second to the ball on everything, and failed to create pretty much any chances at all throughout the first half. I had to feel sorry for the travelling fans, of whom some made a 600 mile round trip, as the performance showed a complete lack of desire from Conte’s men which was met a ring of boo’s as the first half whistle went.
Chelsea’s main attacking pieces like Hazard, Kante and Moses had poor performances by their standard. The only real chances that came for Chelsea were during the second half, after Newcastle were already 3-0 up by this point. Yet the chances created were few and far between, even with Newcastle sitting quite deep at the back.
Overall the Chelsea fans at the stadium will be disgusted and dissapointed with what’s happened over the weekend. It summarises a poor season by Chelsea’s standards and fans will be looking to the summer to see what changes will happen in the dressing room and in the back office, as something needs to change. Although there’s the FA cup final yet to be played, it could be argued that Champions League football is more important than the FA cup itself, especially when it comes to attracting players to join the club and in terms of global marketing.
However, onto the FA cup final against Man United. The match is sure to be a fiery one, with both teams looking for their first silverware of the season, but I feel many Chelsea fans will feel the trophy masks what has been a very poor season. Interesting times to come at Stamford Bridge.
