After a good result against Burnley mid week, Chelsea were looking to keep the momentum going into the business end of the season. On Sunday they found themselves up against Southampton, who had a very good cup run up to this point and were looking to book a ticket in the final in May.

The game started off very open, it was clear that both teams were preparing to risk it all to get through to the final. Southampton had a few early chances and were pressing high up the pitch especially on the wings, meaning Chelsea were forced to play the long ball. This interrupted Chelsea’s ability to bring the ball up the pitch easily, but Chelsea’s wingers dropped deeper to counter this tactic used by Southampton.

Giroud, who is starting to find his form this season, put Chelsea in front in the first half with a beautiful goal, a short pass from Hazard saw Giroud turn 3 Southampton defenders inside out including the goalkeeper before placing the ball in the net. We think that Giroud has the potential to be a real key piece in Chelsea’s run towards the end of the season, especially with facilitators like Hazard, Fabregas and Pedro in the team.

Southampton did come close to scoring in the game, hitting the post late on. However, Giroud’s replacement Morata doubled the lead for Chelsea, when poor defending from Southampton gave him a clear header to give Chelsea the cushion.

Overall, it was a good performance from Chelsea who will now face United in the final in May. What do you think our chances are of winning the FA cup? We think we have a very good chance but also need to focus on our domestic form to give us the best chance of getting a Champions League place next season.
