Manchester United are expected to complete a deal for Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic ‘in the coming days’.
Jose Mourinho has made a new central midfielder one of his transfer priorities this summer, having already signed Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku to strengthen his defence and attack.
Eric Dier was the Portuguese’s original target, but Tottenham have stood firm in their stance over the England international.
Mourinho has since turned his attentions to Matic, who he managed at Chelsea before leaving in late 2015, to address his problem position.
According to Sky Sports, The Guardian, the Daily Mail and a number of other outlets, the deal is now close to completion.
Juventus had threatened to compete with United over Matic, but it is believed that the Red Devils have now won the race with a £40million bid.
‘It is understood Chelsea have allowed Matic to join United as a goodwill gesture because of his contribution to the club’s two Premier League titles in the last three years,’ it is reported.
Chelsea had hoped to sell Matic to Juventus instead of a domestic rival, but the Serbian wished to move to Old Trafford.
