Manchester United are being tipped to deal Chelsea another huge blow in the transfer market this summer after the latest gossip claims that the Old Trafford club have ‘agreed a fee’ with Monaco for midfield enforcer Tiemoue Bakayoko.
United gazumped the Premier League champions to strike a £75m deal for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku last week and it is now suggested they could do the same with Bakayoko, a player who has seemingly been on the verge of joining Chelsea for several weeks.
Chelsea are long thought to have had a proposed £35m deal in place for the 22-year-old, but an ‘exclusive’ from the Daily Star has sensationally claimed that United themselves have now matched the offer and agreed a possible £35m transfer of their own.
If true, the player will suddenly have a decision to make over which Premier League club he wants to join.
After rumours of a medical in late June, Chelsea were tipped to formally announce the Bakayoko deal when the transfer window officially opened on 1st July, but no such reveal was forthcoming.
It has been 10 days of silence from the club on that front, seemingly with the possibility that the unexpected delay has now opened the door for United to swoop in at the 11th hour.
United had been tipped to pay Chelsea £40m for Nemanja Matic as soon as Bakayoko confirmation was in the bag.
But that deal appeared to stall after relations between the clubs soured over Lukaku and the Manchester club seem to have now cut out the middleman and taken matters into their own hands in the dog-eat-dog world that is the summer transfer market.
Chelsea sealed the £34m signing of German defender Antonio Rudiger from Roma on Sunday, but their only other successful transfer this summer has been the free signing of ex-Manchester City back-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero, a major source of frustration for Antonio Conte.
