Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has revealed that Arsene Wenger’s Gunners were the hardest opponents the Blues faced last season.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the Spaniard made the comments in light of the battles the two London clubs fought against one another during the previous campaign.
Antonio Conte’s men were thoroughly out-played by the Gunners early as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat at the start of the season when they visited the Emirates.
However, Chelsea were able to regroup following the defeat and produce a brilliant run of form to win the Premier League title in Conte’s first season in charge at the club, inflicting a 3-1 defeat over Arsenal along the way.
Despite the revenge win over Arsenal though, Azpilicueta still considers the Gunners his side’s toughest opponents of the previous season:
”When we played Arsenal away. In the first half they were better than us and that is why they were 3-0 up.”
Chelsea are currently making preparations to launch their title defence ahead of the new season, hoping to retain their crown as the start of Conte’s second term in charge at Stamford Bridge quickly approaches.
Also on the cards for the upcoming campaign is the Blue’s return to the Champions League, which they previously won in 2012.
