Chelsea have officially completed the defensive signing of German international centre-back Antonio Rudiger in a deal believed to be worth up to £34m including add-ons.
Rudiger, who now becomes the most expensive central defender in Chelsea history alongside current fan favourite David Luiz, arrives from Roma in Serie A and has signed a five-year contract with the new Premier League champions.
The defender said: “It’s a great feeling because not every player has the opportunity to join a huge club like this.
“I am looking forward to meeting up with my new team-mates and I’m very proud to officially become a Chelsea player.”
The 24-year-old former VfB Stuttgart player had been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for well over 12 months and will now boost the squad ahead of a return to the Champions League in 2017/18 and in the wake of John Terry’s departure.
He will add depth and competition for places, with himself, Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, the aforementioned Luiz, and Kurt Zouma all set to offer options to manager Antonio Conte.
A full international since 2014, Rudiger was part of the experimental and largely inexperienced German squad that claimed victory in the Confederations Cup earlier this month and helped Roma to a second place finish in Italy last season.
