Antonio Rudiger played a straight bat when asked whether he was set to join Chelsea this summer.

Rudiger is a reported £33m target for the Premier League champions, having been identified by Antonio Conte as a versatile defensive option.

The 24-year-old is a centre-half but can play at right-back, and played as the left-sided centre-half in a defensive back three as Germany won the Confederations Cup by beating Chile.

That position is normally reserved for Gary Cahill, who captained the Blues to the title this past season, but Rudiger might well be pencilled in to replace the 31-year-old.

Rudiger was asked about reports of a move to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but gave the questions short shrift.

“It’s not about the future now, it’s now about enjoyment,” he said. “I need to enjoy this moment and I’m enjoying it to the fullest.

“The rest we will see in the coming weeks.”

Chelsea have made just one signing so far this summer, with goalkeeper Willy Caballero arriving as a free agent.
