Eric Cantona has told Antonio Conte not to “run a team with your thumbs” after the Italian’s controversial alleged text to Diego Costa.
Costa looks likely to depart Stamford Bridge this summer despite helping the Blues win a second Premier League title in three years with 20 goals this past season.
Conte reportedly texted the forward to tell him he was no longer a part of his plans going forward, and that he was free to look for another club.
The message, which significantly weakens Chelsea’s negotiating position as potential buyers now know Costa is unwanted at the club, is thought to have created tension between Conte and the board.
Chelsea moved to deny claims the manager was looking to quit earlier this week, but Manchester United legend Cantona says the damage has already been done.
“Angry texting, it’s not a good idea and breaking up with a text it’s even worse,” Cantona told Eurosport.
“Mix the two together and you have Antonio Conte’s now infamous: ‘Good luck for next year but you are not part of my plan.’
“Every single letter of that sentence addressed to Diego Costa may cost Chelsea about a million euros. Don’t run a team with your thumbs!”
