Rafa Benitez has made an offer to bring Willy Caballero to the North East, according to the player’s agent.
Caballero, who has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea, will leave the Etihad when his contract expires this summer. He has been deemed surplus to requirements at City following Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson’s move from Benfica.
Antonio Conte was believed to be interested in bringing Caballero to Stamford Bridge as back-up to Thibaut Courtois, and as a replacement for Asmir Begovic, who has joined Bournemouth.
But with Benitez desperate to sign a new number one this summer, a late move from the Magpies could see the Argentine move to the North East, as Rafa is said to be ‘pulling out all the stops’ to sign him.
Speaking to GOAL, the 35-year-old’s agent, Adrian Faija, said: “We have some offers from England, he wants to stay in England.
“Newcastle is cold but pretty.”
Caballero ended last season as Pep Guardiola’s number one following injury to Claudio Bravo, who had what could be described as a fairly ‘inconsistent’ first season in the Premier League.
