Romelu Lukaku has dropped the biggest hint yet over which club he intends to join from Everton this summer.
The Toffees’ talismanic striker has been linked with summer switches to Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea in recent days, and it is the latter of that duo who seem firm favourites to re-sign the former player.
Lukaku has now seemingly revealed that he plans to join the Premier League champions after activity on his personal Twitter account showed that the Belgium international had followed Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Gary Cahill, as well as youngster Lewis Barker, on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old had admitted that he has “no option” but to leave Everton after four seasons at the club, and told members of the press that he had made his mind up on what team he wanted to sign for in the upcoming summer transfer window.
His latest social media activity, coupled with the likes of Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois all tipping him to head back to Stamford Bridge, has now provided a massive indication as to Lukaku’s future plans.
Everton, however, will try to pull out all the stops on retaining the key man’s services heading into the new campaign.
Manager Ronald Koeman has gone on record saying that the Blues are under no pressure to sell Lukaku due to the two years he has left to run on his Goodison Park contract, and the Toffees have slapped a eye watering £100m on their 26-goal forward in a bid to thwart interested parties from enquiring about his availability.
Lukaku joined Everton from Chelsea, initially on a season-long loan, after he fell out of favour in London under former manager Jose Mourinho, and completed a club-record £28m permanent move to Merseyside the following summer after a successful spell in L4.
Everton’s struggles in the Premier League under Roberto Martinez over two successive seasons led to widespread rumours that Lukaku would up sticks in the 2016 summer window, but the arrival of Koeman managed to convince him to stay for an extra 12 months.
The Toffees offered Lukaku a club-record £100,000-a-week contract in March to extend his stay, but the Belgium international rejected that offer and now wants out of the club that he has notched 61 goals for during his time at Goodison.
