Romelu Lukaku appears to be odds on to re-sign for Chelsea in the near future…as long as that move hasn’t been jinxed by Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, who reported that the Belgian agreed terms with the Blues.
In a Q&A with football fans online, Palmeri tweeted: “Chelsea have reached an agreement on principles with Lukaku. Still under negotiations the fee with Everton.”
However, the report was met with a swift reaction from Twitter user @TheMaddenV1, who responded with an impressive collage made up of reports that Palmeri got very wrong.
Palmeri’s previous reports that never came to fruition included Real Madrid signing Falcao, Arsenal agreeing a deal for Iker Casillas and Daniel Agger to Barcelona.
While all football journalists will tell you they report the story, they don’t predict the future, that is an alarming track record when put together in a graphic. Which leads one to wonder: is the Lukaku bit wrong as well?
Lukaku has been strongly linked with a return to Chelsea this summer and a move is very likely, however.
Speaking to Sky Sports whilst on international duty on Tuesday, the forward claimed to have already agreed terms with his next club.
“My agent knows what’s going to happen and I know as well,” he said.
“I’m staying calm and we have an agreement with the club as well. We stay calm and at least we have a direction where we want to go.
“I’m just going to rest for a few days and then just prepare for next season. I want to put the time in on my holiday to take everything to another level and be better than I was last year.”
