Newly-promoted English Premier League side Newcastle United are believed to be closing in on the signing of Chelsea’s hot-prospect Tammy Abraham, on loan until the end of the 2017-2018 season.
According to reports from The Telegraph, the England Under-21 frontman is very keen on a switch to the North-East, and the Magpies hope to seal the deal before the weekend.
Abraham’s representatives have reportedly assured officials at St James’ Park that the player is eager to join the Toon, which will see the exciting prospect play in the Premier League next season.
Chelsea loaned Abraham to Championship side Bristol City last season, where the 19-year-old became a fan favourite by scoring 24 goals in 43 appearances for the Robins. Abraham showed himself to be a clinical finisher, scoring many of his goals from inside the six-yard box. The 6ft 2″. striker is also a threat in the air, and proved a real handful for opposition defenders.
Abraham will now be keen to hone his talents in the Premier League, and Chelsea will be eager to see their talented teenage prospect perform at a higher level. Playing for a club the size of the Toon could be a baptism of fire for Abraham, but if the player can flourish at the North-East side then he could well earn himself a place in the Chelsea squad by the 2018-2019 season.
It is likely that Newcastle will be required to pay a loan fee for the player, in addition to a contribution towards the player’s wages. The finer details of the deal are yet to be confirmed, however the switch looks almost certain to take place; after Abraham reportedly met with Magpies’ boss Rafael Benítez and assured him that he was set on a move to the North-East.
Benítez seems to be taking a thrifty approach to the transfer window so far, and is believed to be keen on bringing in Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero on a free transfer. Club owner Mike Ashley is yet to commit to presenting Benítez with the transfer war-chest he craves, and the Spanish manager will most likely have to sell existing players to boost his transfer funds.
