Liverpool are ready to show they mean business in this transfer window and, if the Echo‘s report is to be believed, are poised to go toe-to-toe with their biggest rivals to secure a major signing.
The news source are claiming that the Reds are ready to match whatever Manchester City and Chelsea are willing to offer Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.
The centre-back was arguably the Premier League’s best defender during the first half of last season, but was unfortunate to get sidelined with an ankle back in January.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has long been an admirer, identifying the Dutchman as a top defensive target for next season, having failed to fix the leaky defence that garnered a myriad of complaints during the campaign before.
The club is certainly on the up, though, with Champions League qualification being achieved at the end of the season. But, the German will want to be challenging for the title next term, and knows he needs a formidable back-line to do so.
Premier League title holders Chelsea are also very interested in signing the defender, as are Pep Guardiola’s City. As much as Liverpool are able to match whatever sum is thrown at the Saints and their defender, they will still be left with the task of convincing the player that Anfield is the best possible destination for him.
City were said to have agreed a £200,00-a-week move with the Dutchman, yet it appears that a deal is far from being complete and there’s still a chance to snatch him up from under their noses.
