• Nemanja Matic Is Keen on Mourinho Reunion If Man Utd Can Agree Transfer Fee With Chelsea

    News Thu 1 Jun 2017

José Mourinho is believed to be keen to reunite with Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matić in Manchester, after failing in his attempts to sign the 28-year-old last season.

Mourinho was keen to sign Matić during his first summer in charge of Manchester United. However, the transfer was blocked by Antonio Conte. It is now believed that Matić will be allowed to leave Chelsea this summer and make a switch to join up with his former manager, according to the Manchester Evening News

Matić is understood to be keen on the transfer to Old Trafford and link up again with Mourinho, despite winning the Premier League this season with Chelsea.

United, who finished sixth in the league this season, want to bring in a more defensive-minded midfielder such as Matić to allow Paul Pogba to have more freedom in pushing forward.

Mourinho identified the Serbian anchor after the departures of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger mid-season left United short of numbers in their midfield.

Matić is a proven Premier League star with bags of experience at the highest level. He is highly regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in European football and would likely be welcomed at United, if it brought the best out of £89m Paul Pogba.

It was reported earlier this year that Nemanja Matić would be rewarded with a new contract at Stamford Bridge that would keep him at the club beyond 2019 when his current deal expires. It now appears, however, that Antonio Conte will allow the midfielder to leave the club despite showing his importance during Chelsea’s title winning campaign.
