• Chelsea Closing in on Monaco Star With Manchester United Keen on Nemanja Matic

    News Thu 1 Jun 2017

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko in a deal that could be worth around £42m, as per Independent.

If Antonio Conte’s side can secure the mega-money deal, it could see Nemanja Matic join Manchester United as Jose Mourinho has expressed significant interest in his former player.

The Blues manager is desperate to strengthen his midfield in order to compete on multiple fronts next season and Bakayoko could be the perfect partner for N’Golo Kante.

Cesc Fabregas is also linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, further underlining Conte’s need for midfield reinforcements.

French international Bakayoko has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in Ligue 1 and the Champions League – as have much of Monaco’s squad – with the 22-year-old attracting significant interest from across Europe.

Manchester City fans will remember the midfielder in a slightly negative light after he scored the winner in their last-16 European tie in the 3-1 victory in France.

However, Bakayoko’s sale could be upheld if the club choose to sell Fabinho – who United are also interested in – with Leonardo Jardim unlikely to sell both defensive midfielders this summer.

The principality club may have signed Youri Tielemans from Anderlecht, but the Belgian was likely acquired to sit next to one of the pragmatic enforcers.

Monaco have already had to sell Bernardo Silva to Manchester City in a £43m deal with Benjamin Mendy also said to be close to signing for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Jardim’s side were one of the standout performers in Europe this season, but the club’s lack of pedigree means that this summer, they face losing most of their valuable assets.
