The £33m summer signing was expected to make his first start of the season with Diego Costa suspended but Chelsea boss Conte opted to recall Pedro.

To further compound Batshuayi’s woe, he had to wait until the 94th minute to step foot on the pitch with the three points secured thanks to a Pedro brace and Eden Hazard penalty.

Despite his difficult afternoon, Batshuayi is staying positive.

After the full-time whistle, he wrote on Twitter: “Thank you all for your continuous support and messages #chinUp #keepStrong #topoftheleague.”

Batshuayi joined Chelsea from Marseille as one of Europe’s most promising young strikers but has found his opportunities limited by Costa’s fine form.

The Belgium international has held talks with the club about his situation but has been promised he has a long-term future.

West Ham have been linked with a loan move for Batshuayi.

The Hammers are not enjoying their finest campaign and have seen summer striking recruits Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri spectacularly flop.
