Chelsea legend Pat Nevin has described centre-back David Luiz as the most important defender in Antonio Conte’s squad.

The Brazilian defender, who moved back to the West London club from PSG in the summer, has become a vital part of the back three in Conte’s 3-4-3 system.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Nevin said: “He’s proven me completely and utterly right. He will make mistakes. If you’re a player of that type if that sort of area you will make mistakes.

“[The switch to 3-4-3] is helping him massively. But also [when he was first at Chelsea] he was younger and hadn’t learned the position yet.

“At the start of the season everyone got asked who they thought would win the league – I said Man United but I had one caveat. Chelsea, if they buy a left-back and a centre-back, then they’ve got a chance. They’ve bought [Marcos] Alonso and they’ve bought David Luiz and I thought ‘you’ve got a chance’.

“He’s in the middle of a brilliant defence now and probably the most important part of it.”
