Liverpool’s new defender Ragnar Klavan will get his first taste of action as a Reds player in their International Champions Cup clash with Premier League rivals Chelsea on Thursday.
According to the Liverpool Echo, as a result of the numerous absentees from Jurgen Klopp’s defensive line, Klavan is in line to make his Reds bow.
Mamadou Sakho has been sent back to Merseyside to continue his rehabilitation, whilst Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are both out of action with injury. The recent acquisition from German side Augsburg is therefore expected to partner Dejan Lovren at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
It is believed that Klopp will not take any chances on Matip’s ankle in Thursday’s pre-season friendly until his medical team are convinced that he is fit for action.
Despite appearing in Liverpool’s UK friendlies, it remains unclear when the free transfer will return to action. However, his absence from the fixture has alleviated fears that he may miss a longer period of time than first thought.
Matip’s former Bundesliga opponent Klavan is set to take his place in the side having impressed during his time in Germany.
Unknown to the majority of Reds fans, the Estonian will be hoping to use the opportunity to establish his place in the first team.
Mamadou Sakho’s departure from the training camp has cast doubt over his future at the club, whilst Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure have already departed for Fenerbahce and Celtic respectively.
Should Liverpool fans wish to get a look at their new man, they’ll have to be up at 4.30am to watch the game which takes place in California.
