Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic has been at the centre of much speculation this summer, now with fresh reports that the 27-year-old is at the top of Juventus’ hitlist as they look to replace Paul Pogba ahead of the latter’s impending move to Manchester United.
Pogba looks set to join United for a world record fee in the coming days or weeks, leaving the reigning Serie A champions with a gaping hole to plug in their midfield before the start of the coming season.
The Mail claim that Matic is the man that Massimiliano Allegri has in mind to replace the France international, with the Italians ready to splash out some of the £100m they are rumoured to be set to receive for Pogba’s services.
A larger chunk of that fee looks set to go to Napoli in the coming days after in-demand forward Gonzalo Higuain reportedly had a medical with i bianconeri on Friday ahead of a big-money move – with the release clause in his Napoli contract standing at €94.5m.
Chelsea’s recent signing of N’Golo Kante from Leicester City has increased the chance that the Blues could be tempted to let Matic go if the money was right, although it’s understood that Antonio Conte would rather keep hold of the fiesty midfielder.
The Blues already sold Matic once under a previous regime, allowing him to depart cheaply as part of a move for David Luiz back in 2011 – before buying him back three years later for around £30m after a series of impressive performances.
The Blues are not expected to make a profit on that £30m fee if they sell him this summer – with the possibility that they won’t even recoup that full fee after Matic’s disappointing showings last season.
