Michael Essien could be set for a return to football after a disappointing end to his career with Greek side Panathinaikos.
Reported in GhanaWeb, the former Chelsea midfielder is available on a free transfer following his release for the Greek club.
It is believed that ‘the Bison’, as he is known, may reunite with his former AC Milan and Ghanaian teammate Sulley Muntari at Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad Jeddah.
Muntari also moved to the Jeddah-based side on a free transfer in 2015, signing a two-year deal worth roughly £5m.
At the age of 33, Essien’s magnificent career is nearing an end. The Ghanaian’s career was at his peak during his time at Chelsea, where a nine-year stint at Stamford Bridge saw him win all that was on offer.
The midfielder has also featured for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including AC Milan and Real Madrid.
Having made 58 international appearances for Ghana, Essien will be hoping to add one final honour to his name.
Al Ittihad finished third in the Saudi Premier League last season and have won the league title eight times in their history.
